We almost had a big puppy emergency yesterday.

Philip and I were over at my dad’s house “helping” him move his hot water heater. By helping, I mean “we” did it for him. And by we, I mean Phillip did most of the work, with me as the tool fetcher. My sister came along later and brought all of her kids. They thought they were going to fish in the pond so Philip prepped their fishing poles for them. Instead of actually going fishing, they decided to leave the poles on the ground. Amber thought that the fishing bait smelled kind of good, so she took a gander. We discovered this when she was running across the yard pulling the fishing pole behind her. Luckily she did not swallow the hook; it had just pierced her upper lip. We were able to get her all fixed up in about five minutes.

The funny part is that my dad tended to her a heck of a lot faster than he did to me when I had a similar thing happen to me. When it was me with a hook through my mouth, he fixed a pot of coffee before even looking at me. To be fair though, the hook was not bothering me at all. I don’t think it was bothering Amber to much either, but she did get a little antsy when we tried to hold her down to work on her. The situation was almost made worst when we cut the barbed part of the hook off, and it fell to the bottom part of her mouth. Most of our time was spent trying to find the barbed, before we swallowed it. In the end, there was just a little blood and an happy pup.

I asked my dad if he wanted to get her a barbell for her lip since it was already pierced, but he declined.

I was downtown last week getting my notary renewed. As I was exiting the building I noticed a sign pointing towards driver’s license renewal. I’ve been meaning to get mine fixed for quite a while, since renew sticker on the back has faded, and that confuses a lot of people about its expiration date. I would have not been able to get into a casino a few months ago if I did not have my handgun permit. Well I head that direction expecting to see a normal DMV scenario; long lines, pissed off people, and noise. Well to my surprise, there was nobody in line, and four smiling faces waiting to help me. I was able to get in and out in less than five minutes. This was extra surprising because it was towards the end of the month, a time when licenses plates have to be renewed, and it was at lunch time. Needless to say, I will be conduction all future business with the DMV at the downtown branch. Even if there is a longer wait next time, at least the people are friendly.

I was flipping through the channels and happened to see a young Adam Sandler. So I stopped, and it it turned out to be an episode of The Cosby Show. In next scene, they were talking about "New Math." I've heard that saying many time before, but have never known what they are talking about. What does one do now-a-days when he does not understand something? Google it of course. Well I still don't know what exactly new match is, I did run across this. I thought it was pretty funny, so now I share.

NEW MATH
Teaching Math in 1950:
----------------------
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?
Teaching Math in 1960:
----------------------
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?
Teaching Math in 1970:
----------------------
A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a set "M" of money. The
cardinality of set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar.
Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set "M". The set "C",
the cost of production, contains 20 fewer points than set "M."
Represent the set "C" as a subset of set "M" and answer the following
question:
What is the cardinality of the set "P" for profits?
Teaching Math in 1980:
----------------------
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
Her cost of production is $80 and her profit is $20. Your assignment:
Underline the number 20.
Teaching Math in 1990:
----------------------
By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the
logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living?
Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did
the forest birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees?
There are no wrong answers.
Teaching Math in 1996:
---------------------
By laying off 40% of its loggers, a company improves its stock price
from $80 to $100. How much capital gain per share does the CEO make
by exercising his stock options at $80? Assume capital gains are no
longer taxed, because this encourages investment.
Teaching Math in 1997:
----------------------
A company out-sources all of its loggers. The firm saves on benefits,
and when demand for its product is down, the logging work force can
easily be cut back. The average logger employed by the company earned
$50,000, had three weeks vacation, a nice retirement plan and medical
insurance. The contracted logger charges $50 an hour. Was
outsourcing a good move?
Teaching Math in 1998:
----------------------
A laid-off logger with four kids at home and a ridiculous alimony from
his first failed marriage comes into the logging-company corporate
offices and goes postal, mowing down 16 executives and a couple of
secretaries, and gets lucky when he nails a politician on the premises
collecting his kickback. Was outsourcing the loggers a good move for
the company?
Teaching Math in 1999:
----------------------
A laid-off logger serving time in Folsom for blowing away several
people is being trained as a COBOL programmer in order to work on Y2K
projects. What is the probability that the automatic cell doors will
open on their own as of 00:01, 01/01/00?

Yesterday was a good day. I rode my bike the most it has been ridden so far this year. I think I must have put on about 350 miles. It started off by just looking for a place to eat breakfast. Somebody told me that they just put in a Cracker Barrel at 40 and Collierville-Arlington Rd. so that is where we headed to. When we got there, it was no where to be found, so I stopped at the gas station to ask questions. Somebody told me that it was one exit down at Lakeland to we were off again. Again, it was no where to be found. We decided to just eat at McDonalds since it was there. When we got inside, we looked at our watches and realized at was 11, so breakfast was no longer being served. Screw that, we went across the street to The Waffle House. There were about 10 people ahead of us waiting for a seat. Well screw that to, so we headed to Jackson and ate at that Cracker Barrel.

From there we rode to Loretta Lynn’s for no other reason that it was a place to go. It was a bit on the hot side, but at least it did not rain.

There was a down side to all of this. I now need to take my bike in for service and get a new rear tire. And seeing as how motorcycle tires are about ½ the size of regular tires, it will cost about twice as much.

I also got a weird tan. I will see if it will show in a pic, and if so, post it.

Memphians can find out now. The original Pig format is returning to the airwaves on AM 1210.

The switch from that station's "Music of Your Life" format was scheduled to take place Thursday night.

Flinn Broadcasting has been playing the eclectic Pig format on its Web site, www.radiopig.com. Now, what's on the Web also will be on the radio.

Music formats generally don't work on AM radio, which AM 1210 owner George S. Flinn readily acknowledges.

"I'm committed to the format," he said. "I'm going to put it on 1210 and gauge audience reaction."

Flinn hopes the format's fans will contact the station.

"I'd love to have it on FM. Let's see what kind of support we can garner," Flinn said.

There isn't room for the format on any of Flinn's FM stations. He said he is "actively pursuing" ways to get it onto an FM station.

The format had been on Flinn's FM 107.5 frequency until last March, when the station switched to current hits.

The Pig's format features a much wider range of music than is heard on other rock stations. Songs played during a recent hour included "Wonder" by Natalie Merchant, "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell, "Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)" by Bob Dylan and "Banana Puddin' " by Southern Culture on the Skids.

Reasons to worry when "new" software comes in the mail:

1. It comes on a floppy disk.
2. The install executable is install.exe

For you non geeks, most software comes on a CD-ROM now. A lot of computer makers have even stated not including a floppy drive w/ new computers. As for the install.exe, the standard install executable has been setup.exe since about the time Windows 3.10 come out.

Am I the only one that finds this peculiar?

Went to Music Fest this weekend and had a hell of a time. The only two bands that we saw were Robert Earl King and Paul Thorn. Both were excellent. The only bad experience was that they just sold Bud and Bud Light. To compensate for this, we went to The Flying Saucer for a few hours. Got lucky, because we got there about 5 min before they started to charge cover, and got the last seats available. There, Krysilus was playing. They are a great cover band with a few songs of their own. I would recommend anybody in this area to go see them if they ever get a chance. It doesn't hurt that the lead singer is pretty hot. :)

One of the highlights of the evening was watching a drunk girl. Soon after we arrived, she was carried out over some guys solder. She was completely passed out. About 20 min later, she tried to come back in, but the bouncer would not let her. This went on for 3 more hours. Every once in a while, she would make a run for the door, clinging onto anything solid etc. Lucky for the bouncer, she weighted a little over 100lbs if that much, so he was able to hold her back with one hand and check ID's in the other. That has to be a plus of being a chick. If it was a guy trying to pull that shit, I am sure the bouncer would of just decked him, and then called the cops.

I hate the telephone company.

Yesterday, I finally started to put up a fence. In preparation for this, I had to get the utilities marked. One has to get this done to keep from digging up a power/telephone/cable/gas lines. The only one in the way was the telephone line. Whoever installed it apparently thought it would be a good idea to run the cable in such a fashion that it would be all but impossible to install a fence. I happened to see a telephone chick when I got home from work yesterday, and asked it there was anything I can do about the way they installed it. She pretty much just said, "Tough Shit!" This was after she said that I should not worry because telephone lines are buried at least 16 inches deep. I of course have to go at least 24.

Well as I stated to dig my first post, I immediately hit the telephone line. The thing was not even 3 inches deep. It looks like they did not even bury the line, but just threw the sod on top of it. This turned out to be in my favor because I ended up digging up about 30 feet of the cable so I could move it. About one hour into the project, I was on the phone with my father when the phones went dead. I was very much glad I was on the phone when this happened, otherwise I would of thought I caused it. All of this made a 1 hour project take 1/2 a day.

At least my night went a little better. I went to see The Dempseys last night at Blues City Cafe. For anybody who has not seen them, I highly recommend doing it some time. They put on one hell of a show.

I was suppose to meet a LJ friend there, but they were a no show. (You know who you are. ;))

I got to bed around 2, and then woke up at 6. I forced myself to go back to sleep and was awakend at 9 by my UPS alarm. This was a horrible thing because the power was out, now I was really awake, and I could not make coffee. To boot, it's raining so I can't finish my fence.

I am hoping that the rest of my week goes better.
